The U.S. Marine Corps has successfully completed its first live-fire drill using a new air defense system that integrates the Israeli Iron Dome’s Tamir interceptor, Israel’s Defense Ministry confirmed in a recent statement. The prototype system, designed specifically for Marine operations, is a collaboration between Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and U.S.-based Raytheon Technologies, marking a significant development in the Marine Corps’ medium-range air defense capabilities.

The new system combines American radar and command-and-control elements with the Iron Dome’s Tamir interceptors and a mobile launcher. The exercise tested the system’s continuous launch capabilities, with Marine personnel independently operating the system throughout the drill. According to officials, the Marines successfully intercepted multiple targets, validating the Tamir interceptor’s adaptability to intercept various threats, including cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and other aerial projectiles. The training was an essential milestone in evaluating the system’s medium-range interception potential for future operational deployment.

Today the #MarineCorps finished an extensive exercise combining #ironedome, #Israels world famous anti missile defense system.

Rafael and Raytheon developed the system’s mobile launcher to meet the specific needs of the Marine Corps. This prototype is part of a broader assessment program that the Marines have implemented to determine the system’s full operational potential. A key aspect of the test involved training Marines in the complete operation of the system, ensuring they could operate both the launcher and interceptors independently. The U.S. Marine Corps is focused on enhancing its medium-range air defense capabilities to address the diverse range of aerial threats faced in modern warfare.

Israel’s Iron Dome system, which includes Tamir interceptors, is part of the country’s multi-layered missile defense network managed by the Israel Missile Defense Organization under the Directorate of Defense Research & Development. Israel’s defense architecture also includes other defense systems, such as David’s Sling and Arrow systems, designed to provide comprehensive protection against various missile and aerial threats.
