The United States has increased its military presence in the Middle East in response to growing concerns over potential Iranian attacks on Israel. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered the rapid deployment of additional military assets, including a guided-missile submarine and a carrier strike group, to reinforce U.S. capabilities in the region. This move comes in light of escalating tensions following recent assassinations of senior members of Iran-backed groups, Hamas and Hezbollah.
The Pentagon announced that the USS Georgia, a nuclear-powered submarine armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles, has been directed to enter Middle Eastern waters. The deployment of this submarine, along with the accelerated transit of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, is intended as a deterrent against Iran and its proxies, who are believed to be preparing for a large-scale attack on Israel.
The Abraham Lincoln strike group, equipped with F-35C fighter jets and several destroyers, was already en route to the Middle East but has now been ordered to expedite its arrival. The deployment follows a conversation between Austin and his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant, during which they discussed measures to counter potential aggression by Iran and allied groups.
