The US Army Special Forces has successfully completed a comprehensive marksmanship program using an artificial intelligence-enabled weapons simulator. Conducted at the Human Performance Training Center in Fort Carson, Colorado, the training involved members of the 10th Special Forces Group – Airborne (10th SFG-A), a unit renowned for its expertise in unconventional warfare and counterterrorism operations.
The training utilized the VirTra simulator, a cutting-edge platform designed to enhance the shooting skills of both military and law enforcement personnel. Unlike traditional training methods, VirTra offers an immersive experience by simulating real-world scenarios such as high-risk entries, active threats, hostage situations, and threat identification missions. This innovative approach allows soldiers to engage in dynamic environments that closely mirror actual combat conditions.
Jake Blumberg, a cognitive performance specialist with the 10th SFG-A, highlighted the simulator’s ability to integrate marksmanship with various training environments, thereby simulating physical stress akin to that experienced in combat. The VirTra simulator stands out for its capability to analyze and adapt to each soldier’s decisions, offering personalized feedback that promotes skill enhancement through repeated practice.
The VirTra system represents a significant upgrade over the older Engagement Skills Trainer (EST), offering more diverse training options, including weapons qualification and flat range practice, along with specialized drills for reaction and threat discrimination. Its full-time availability to the 10th SFG-A enables soldiers to maintain their shooting proficiency without the logistical challenges of traditional range practice.
