A Ukrainian sniper reportedly struck a Russian armored personnel carrier (APC) from 1,700 meters away during an enemy assault operation this week, according to a report shared on Telegram by Ukraine’s Sniper Group E40.
The sniper reportedly used a Barrett M82A1 rifle, chambered in .50 BMG (12.7×99 mm), to fire several precise shots at the vehicle. One of the rounds reportedly hit the driver, bringing the vehicle to a stop.

“The vehicle stopped, enemy radio chatter screamed the driver’s head was taken off – shock. Even the shooter himself didn’t believe the result at first. But this isn’t a myth. This is the work of our most experienced sniper,” wrote the group.
Anti-materiel rifles, such as the M82A1, are designed for long-range accuracy, capable of effectively engaging targets up to 1,800 meters or more, depending on the ammunition and environmental conditions. Meanwhile, the .50 BMG round is known for its ability to penetrate steel plating and engine blocks, making it highly effective against vehicles and fortified targets.
Ukrainian snipers have carried out similar long-range shots in recent months. In April, a sniper from the Gray Area Group hit a Russian soldier at 1,450 meters using a Canadian PGW LRT-3 rifle.

In November 2023, a Ukrainian sniper serving with the Security Service of Ukraine reportedly set a new world record by eliminating a Russian soldier from a distance of 3,800 meters, surpassing the previous world record of 3,540 meters.
