Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces (SSO) successfully destroyed a Russian Tirada-2 electronic warfare system in the Donetsk region, according to their Telegram channel. This system, developed by Russia to disable communication satellites, was targeted and destroyed following its discovery by the SSO during reconnaissance operations. The missile attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) led to the elimination of this valuable Russian weapon.
The Tirada-2, also known as Tirada-2S, is a portable radio-electronic suppression system specifically designed to interfere with communication satellites. Russia began developing this system in 2001, and it was first publicly mentioned in 2017. The system was reported to have entered service in the Central Military District of Russia in 2019. It was first sighted by Ukraine in the occupied region of Luhansk in 2019. The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMM) also reported the presence of such systems, including the Tirada-2, near Luhansk.
The destruction of the Tirada-2 system is significant as it deprives Russian forces of the capability to disrupt satellite communications used by Ukrainian forces, which are crucial for operational coordination on the battlefield. Access to satellites, notably Elon Musk’s Starlink network, has been essential for Ukraine’s defense against Russia, facilitating communication between soldiers and operating weapons systems and drones.
