Ukrainian troops continue to control about 60% of the border town of Vovchansk in the Kharkiv region, amidst persistent efforts by Russian forces to capture the area. This update comes amid intense house-to-house fighting as Ukraine defends this critical location.

Roman Semenukha, the deputy governor of the Kharkiv region, stated that Russian forces are actively trying to push Ukrainian defenders out of Vovchansk. He confirmed that Ukrainian forces are holding approximately 60% of the town, indicating ongoing clashes.

Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported that the frontline now runs along the Vovcha River, which divides the town. Ukrainian soldiers are engaged in combat to defend every house and street. The police chief of Vovchansk recently noted that Russian forces have established positions within the town, describing the situation as very challenging.

The conflict in the Kharkiv region has necessitated the deployment of Ukrainian reinforcements, stretching the country’s military resources along the extensive frontline in the east and south. Ukrainian General Staff announced that their forces repelled Russian attacks near Starytsia, a village close to the Russian border, while also strengthening defensive positions.

Since May 10, local authorities have evacuated around 10,500 residents from the border areas due to the Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region. The Ukrainian military reported that Russia has lost over 1,500 soldiers and 263 pieces of military equipment, including 75 drones, 66 army vehicles, and eight tanks, in the past week. Russian forces have also attempted to breach Ukrainian defenses using aircraft and guided bombs, leading to multiple ground skirmishes.

In addition to the ground assaults, there have been significant aerial confrontations. Russia claimed to have shot down 57 Ukrainian drones over the Krasnodar region and several missiles over its territory. Conversely, Ukraine reported destroying over 30 Russian drones.

Recent Russian strikes in the Kharkiv region have resulted in the deaths of at least 11 people and injuries to dozens more, including an attack on a lakeside resort near Kharkiv. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin noted that Russia is increasingly using Iranian drones to target civilian areas in Ukraine.
