Ukrainian drones struck two self-propelled S-400 “Triumf” launchers in Russia’s Belgorod region on Sunday, in an operation by the 15th Separate Artillery Reconnaissance Brigade, “Black Forest,” the Ukrainian General Staff confirmed Thursday.
According to the Ukrainian military, the system is operated by the 568th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment of the Russian Armed Forces.
The attack destroyed the launchers and their ammunition, including four 48N6DM anti-aircraft guided missiles inside launch containers, according to the general staff.
The S-400 “Triumf” is Russia’s long-range air defense system, capable of engaging aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles at ranges of up to 400 kilometers (250 miles). Each launcher can carry four missiles and track multiple targets simultaneously.
The 48N6DM is a key interceptor missile of the S-400 system. It can engage targets at a maximum range of up to 250 kilometers (155 miles) and reach altitudes of around 30 kilometers (98,000 feet).
