The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine introduced the “Special Forces cat” through its official social media account on X (formerly known as Twitter). The photo, which quickly captured the attention of thousands, features a soldier holding a brown-and-black tabby cat, with both their eyes hidden behind an edited bar, suggesting the cat’s “extremely classified” status
The Ukrainian community has also rallied to support stray animals affected by the war, undertaking efforts to provide necessary care, including sterilization and vaccination, despite the dire circumstances. On the front lines, cats have been deployed for practical reasons, such as controlling rodent populations that threaten supplies, but have also become cherished companions for soldiers, offering comfort and a sense of home in the midst of adversity.
