the Ukrainian Air Force achieved a notable success by downing a Russian A-50 long-range radar detection and control airplane. Additionally, an IL-22 command plane was also targeted and suffered considerable damage. This operation took place over the Sea of Azov on Sunday evening.
The A-50 is a key asset in the Russian military’s arsenal, featuring advanced radar capabilities. It is a four-engine jet-propelled aircraft, equipped with a rotating radar that scans 360 degrees. This radar can detect radars and potential targets both in the air and on land, up to distances of 200-400 km. The aircraft can also conduct radio-electronic reconnaissance and is equipped with electronic warfare equipment.
The loss of the A-50 is a significant blow to the Russian Air Force. According to various estimates, Russia had between 10 and 12 of these radar planes as of 2022. In March 2023, Ukrainian saboteurs had previously damaged one A-50 parked on an airfield in Machulishchi, Belarus with a drone.
Regarding the IL-22 command plane, initial reports suggest it managed to land in Russia despite the damage, but it disappeared from radar in the Kerch area of Crimea after beginning its descent. The condition of the crew aboard the IL-22 remains unclear, with unconfirmed reports of potential casualties.
Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk referenced the operation with a message: “This is for Dnipro, monsters. Burn in hell!” This message was accompanied by a plane emoji and a photo of a civilian building hit by a Russian missile in Dnipro last year,
