Ukraine said it has achieved a world first by downing a Russian Shahed-type drone using an interceptor launched from a naval platform.
In a Facebook post, the Unmanned Systems Forces (USF) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said the operation was carried out by operators from the 412th “Nemesis” Brigade. The timing and location of the attack, as well as the type of interceptor used were not disclosed.

The USF said the operation represents a “new level of integration between maritime and aerial unmanned capabilities.”
“The use of overwater vehicles for the deployment of interceptor drones expands the capabilities of countering air threats and forms an additional echelon of protection of Ukrainian cities,” it added.
Ukrainian defense publication Defense Express said the new tactic expands options for countering large-scale Shahed attacks.
“The key feature of this interception is the use of a surface-based maritime drone as a launch platform. This approach expands the interception zones for enemy UAVs, which typically operate over water areas beyond the reach of ground-based air defense systems. This opens up a fundamentally new dimension in countering large-scale Shahed attacks,” the news outlet noted.
The development comes as both Ukraine and Russia continue to expand their use of unmanned systems across land, air, and sea domains.
It also comes amid an intensified campaign by the USF to degrade Russian military assets and infrastructure.
Just days earlier, units under the command of Robert “Madyar” Brovdi said they successfully targeted 16 Russian high-value targets. The strikes hit Iskander missile systems in occupied Crimea, as well as air defense assets including the Pantsir-S1 and Buk-M1, along with several ammunition and oil depots.
