On December 11, 2023, a U.S. Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed into the waters off the coast of South Korea during a routine training flight. The pilot aboard the aircraft safely ejected and was subsequently rescued by South Korean maritime forces. The pilot, who remained unidentified, was reported to be in stable condition and was transported to Kunsan Air Base for further evaluation. The cause of the in-flight emergency that led to the crash is currently under investigation. This incident follows a recent crash of a U.S. military Osprey aircraft in Japanese waters, which resulted in casualties.
