The United States partially restricted satellite intelligence sharing with South Korea on North Korean nuclear technology, Seoul military officials confirmed Tuesday, following Unification Minister Chung Dong-young’s identification of a previously undisclosed uranium enrichment site.
A senior official told Yonhap that Washington cut satellite intelligence access from early April. Restrictions cover “information regarding parts of North Korea’s technology,” the official said, while missile launch surveillance and military readiness remain normal.

The cutoff landed six days after International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi confirmed in Seoul on April 15 “a rapid increase in the operations” at North Korea’s Yongbyon nuclear complex and probable construction of a new enrichment facility. Grossi described the gains as “a very serious increase” in North Korea’s nuclear production, with Pyongyang’s arsenal estimated at “a few dozen warheads.”
North Korea has made a “very serious increase” in its ability to produce nuclear weapons, and has started building a second reprocessing unit at Yongbyon, according to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

The controversy traces to March, when Chung told lawmakers North Korea operates a uranium enrichment facility in Kusong, North Pyongan Province, alongside established sites at Yongbyon and Kangson. Washington reportedly believes the disclosure drew on shared U.S. intelligence.
Chung denied it, pointing to a 2016 report by the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) that tentatively identified a centrifuge facility near Panghyon Air Base in Kusong. “This is open information,” Chung said.
Writing on X from New Delhi while visiting India, President Lee Jae-myung rejected the allegations. “Any claims or actions premised on the assumption that minister Chung leaked classified information provided by the United States are wrong,” Lee wrote. “I must look closely into why such an absurd situation is unfolding.”

Hankyoreh reported Washington raised additional grievances, including pending legislation to transfer non-military Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) access authority away from the U.S.-led United Nations Command (UNC).
The People Power Party called the disclosure “a clear security disaster.” As of publication, no U.S. agency has confirmed the restrictions.
