The U.S. Army Special Operations Aviation Command (USASOAC) has awarded Boeing a $115 million contract to produce two more MH-47G Block II Chinook helicopters and to initiate advanced procurement for future aircraft. This contract brings the total number of MH-47G Block II helicopters ordered by the U.S. Army to 46.
Heather McBryan, Vice President and Program Manager for Boeing Defense, Space & Security, emphasized the importance of the Chinook in special operations, stating, “Whether it’s operating in the dead of night or in difficult terrain, the MH-47G Block II is a proven workhorse for special operations. It is our privilege to support ongoing USASOAC modernization efforts that will continue to have a real-world impact on U.S. national security.”
These helicopters feature a reinforced airframe, redesigned fuel tanks, and state-of-the-art avionics, enhancing their range, durability, and operational efficiency. The MH-47G Block II can perform a variety of tasks, including troop insertion and extraction, cargo transport, and aerial refueling, making it indispensable for special operations.
USASOAC, established in 2011, oversees the organization, training, and deployment of aviation units that support special operations forces worldwide. Known for its elite aviation unit, the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), or the “Night Stalkers,” USASOAC plays a vital role in ensuring that U.S. Army special operations forces have the necessary aviation resources for effective mission execution.
The modernization of the Chinook fleet is also a significant economic driver, supporting over 20,000 jobs and 360 suppliers in 40 states across the U.S. The Block II production leverages and strengthens the manufacturing base, ensuring robust support for new aircraft production and fleet sustainment.
The MH-47G Block II’s advanced capabilities are designed to meet the rigorous demands of special operations missions. Its reinforced airframe enhances durability and resilience, allowing it to withstand the rigors of demanding missions. The redesigned fuel tanks increase fuel capacity and range, enabling extended missions without frequent refueling. Additionally, the state-of-the-art avionics improve navigation, communication, and overall mission capability, ensuring effective operation in complex environments.
The design of the MH-47G Block II also allows for future modernization efforts, ensuring that the helicopter can adapt to evolving mission requirements.
