Sergeant Korbein Schultz, an intelligence analyst with the 506th Infantry Battalion, has been indicted on charges of conspiracy, exporting defense articles without a license, and bribery, according to federal prosecutors. Schultz is accused of leveraging his top-secret security clearance to access and distribute classified documents over a period spanning from June 2022 to at least October 2023. These documents included sensitive information about the U.S. defense of Taiwan, the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), hypersonic missiles, and other advanced military technologies.
The indictment outlines how Schultz communicated with an unnamed conspirator, presumed to be in Hong Kong, through encrypted messaging applications. Schultz was allegedly motivated by financial gains, evidenced by his communications with the conspirator about needing money for personal expenditures, stating “I need to get my other BMW back.” Despite the risks, Schultz continued the illicit exchange of information, even after discussing the arrest of two U.S. Navy sailors for similar crimes. “I will just keep sending you an abundance of information,” Schulz stated in a message to his counterpart.
The U.S. Department of Justice has emphasized the severity of Schultz’s actions, stating that such betrayals compromise the security of the American people and will not be tolerated. Schultz’s indictment follows other recent incidents of leaked classified information, indicating a concerning trend within the U.S. military and intelligence communities.
