Haiti is currently grappling with a dire security situation as gangs wield increasing power in the capital, Port-au-Prince, prompting the United States to call for an “urgent” political transition. This development comes amid Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s struggles to maintain control and opposition demands for his resignation. The crisis deepened as Henry, last seen in Kenya signing an agreement for a Kenyan-led multinational mission to aid Haiti, found himself diverted to Puerto Rico due to a change in plans by the Dominican government.
In light of the escalating violence, the U.S. has not directly called for Henry’s resignation but has emphasized the need for a move towards establishing a transitional government aimed at stabilizing the country and setting the stage for elections.Â
Notably, gang leader Jimmy Cherizier, also known as “Barbeque,” has openly challenged Henry’s administration, claiming responsibility for the attacks and issuing a grave warning of potential civil war and genocide if the international community continues to support Henry.
