Troops stationed in extremely cold weather locations where temperatures are expected to drop below -20°F will receive a new “Cold Weather Location” special duty pay, as authorized by the annual defense bill. While the specific locations eligible for this pay and the amount are yet to be determined, it could apply to places like Alaska, Greenland’s Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base), and frigid Air Force bases in the upper Midwest. This move may recognize the added challenges faced by personnel living in remote and extreme cold environments, including reduced daylight hours and higher living costs. Additionally, it could be related to the strategic competition between the U.S., China, and Russia in the Arctic region. The measure was included in the fiscal year NDAA version passed by the House and Senate and awaits the President’s signature.
