March was a month for European special operations as Special Operations Command Europe led Trojan Footprint 24, engaging around 2,000 personnel from 12 nations in rigorous training exercises across Bulgaria, Georgia, Germany, Greece, North Macedonia, and Romania. This exercise, which occurs biannually, stands as the largest special operations forces exercise in the European theater in which the U.S. participates, focusing on readiness and interoperability among NATO allies and partners.

Maj. Gen. Steven G. Edwards, Commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command Europe, emphasized the exercise’s goal to demonstrate the collective capability of the U.S. and its allies to address any threats from any direction. The operations aimed at enhancing the interoperability among the forces, showcasing their readiness and strategic positioning within Europe.

The significance of international collaboration for European security was underlined by Darek Coker, a senior civilian exercise planner at SOCEUR and the primary planner for Trojan Footprint. The exercise was geared towards deploying U.S. forces to Europe to form a coalition aimed at building resistance and resilience in anticipation of conflicts. This approach is designed to strengthen peace, stability, and security throughout Europe by ensuring preparedness and seamless integration among allied forces.

The exercise saw participation from forces of Albania, Bulgaria, France, Georgia, Greece, Italy, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Portugal, Romania, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. A key aspect of this year’s exercise was the leadership role taken by individual countries in their respective territories, enhancing the objective of securing Eastern Europe and fostering long-term partnerships between the U.S. and its allies.

Additionally, Trojan Footprint 24 was part of NATO’s Steadfast Defender and the U.S. Department of Defense’s Large Scale Global Exercise 24, aiming to demonstrate the global presence and cohesion of NATO allies and partners. The exercise sent a strategic message of solidarity and vigilance, underscoring the alliance’s commitment to peace, security, and stability in Europe amidst the backdrop of geopolitical tensions.
