On January 28th, an unmanned aerial drone targeted US forces stationed at a small outpost in northeastern Jordan, close to the Syrian border. This attack resulted in the deaths of three US service members and injuries to at least 34 personnel, with some evacuated for higher-level care. The attack occurred early in the morning near the barracks, which may account for the high number of casualties. US Central Command released a statement confirming these details.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an alliance of Iran-backed militant groups, claimed responsibility for this attack, as well as strikes on two other bases. The Jordanian government has been discreet about the exact location of the attack, only confirming it occurred at an “advanced post” along the Jordan-Syria border. Sources familiar with the matter have identified the site as Tower 22 in Jordan, located near the Al Tanf garrison across the border in Syria.
This incident is the latest in over 150 strikes on bases housing US troops in the region since October, following increased tensions after Hamas’s attack on Israel. Iran-backed militias have been employing various means, including drones and rockets, to target US military installations.
