A video circulating on social media shows Taliban security forces patrolling the streets of Kabul on rollerblades, armed with AK-47s and wearing camouflage uniforms. The footage, filmed as part of their official duties, displays the group’s proficiency in rollerblading, including techniques like “skitching” along vehicles. This unusual method of patrolling reflects a broader trend, as rollerblading units have been introduced in other regions like Pakistan and are planned for use in Paris during the 2024 Olympics.

Key Points:

  1. Taliban on Rollerblades: The video shows Taliban soldiers or security troops rollerblading through Kabul’s streets while patrolling, equipped with AK-47-style rifles and wearing camouflage uniforms.
  2. Rollerblading Techniques and Enjoyment: The Taliban members display advanced rollerblading skills, including ‘t-stops’ and ‘skitching’— grabbing onto moving vehicles. Despite the seriousness of their duties, they appear to be enjoying themselves, with many filming the event on their phones.
  3. Widespread Use of Rollerblading in Security Forces: The concept of rollerblading security forces isn’t unique to the Taliban, as similar units exist in Pakistan and are planned for use by police in Paris during the 2024 Olympics.
  4. Improved Infrastructure in Kabul: Veterans familiar with Kabul will notice the improved road conditions, which facilitate high-speed rollerblading, a notable change from the past.
  5. Symbolism and Uniforms: The Taliban members are kitted out in uniforms featuring the black and white flags of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, indicating their official capacity as part of the nation’s security forces.
