T-Mobile customers in the storm’s path have the ability to send text messages via SpaceX’s Starlink satellites, SpaceX announced on Wednesday. The satellite-based texting service is being offered on a “best-effort basis” to help residents stay connected, particularly as widespread power and cell service outages are expected once the storm makes landfall in the Tampa area.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently granted emergency approval for Starlink to provide direct-to-cell service in Florida, allowing T-Mobile customers to send SMS messages, contact emergency services, and receive critical alerts through the Starlink network.
SpaceX stated that the service will allow T-Mobile users to text family members and emergency services, even during outages. However, the company noted that users may need to retry sending messages multiple times and that the service works best outdoors, with a signal strength of one to two bars displaying “T-Mobile SpaceX” as the network name.
This initiative builds on similar efforts during Hurricane Helene, where Starlink provided emergency communication capabilities in affected areas.
Residents preparing for the storm are encouraged to ensure their devices are charged and updated with the latest software. Apple and Google have also highlighted emergency satellite communication options available for iPhone and Pixel devices, providing users with additional ways to reach emergency contacts.
