South Korea Fires Warning Shots at North Korean Soldiers Crossing DMZ

South Korea’s military fired warning shots on Sunday after approximately 20 North Korean soldiers crossed the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), which separates the two Koreas. The incident occurred around 12:30 PM local time, according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). The North Korean troops, believed to have mistakenly crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) within the DMZ, quickly retreated following the warning shots.

The group of North Korean soldiers, armed with field tools such as pickaxes, were conducting tasks within the DMZ when they inadvertently crossed into South Korean territory. South Korean troops responded by broadcasting warnings and firing into the air, prompting the North Korean soldiers to return to their side of the heavily fortified border without further confrontation.

Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, warned South Korea of “new counteractions” if the broadcasts and balloon launches by activists did not cease. She described the situation as a prelude to a dangerous confrontation.

The DMZ, a buffer zone established after the Korean War, is heavily guarded and marked by dense vegetation, making border markers difficult to see. The JCS spokesman noted that the overgrown vegetation likely contributed to the North Korean soldiers losing their way.

The breach follows a series of provocative actions from both sides. North Korea has been planting landmines, disconnecting railways, and installing guard posts within the DMZ. South Korea recently suspended the remaining aspects of the 2018 military agreement, which had been partially halted last November after North Korea launched a spy satellite.
