Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has reportedly expressed concerns about his safety, telling U.S. lawmakers that he fears being assassinated due to his pursuit of a diplomatic agreement with Israel. The Crown Prince, often referred to as MBS, has been negotiating a significant deal that includes normalizing relations with Israel, which he views as crucial for Saudi Arabia’s future but potentially dangerous for his own safety.
According to a report from Politico, MBS referenced the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, who was killed in 1981 after signing a peace treaty with Israel. He questioned U.S. lawmakers about what protections the U.S. had provided Sadat, highlighting the potential risks he faces in advancing a similar peace initiative.
MBS reportedly remains determined to move forward with the agreement, despite these risks. The proposed deal, which includes U.S. security guarantees for Saudi Arabia, has stalled over Israel’s reluctance to support a credible path to a Palestinian state, a condition that MBS insists is necessary for any agreement to succeed.
Despite the challenges, MBS views the potential normalization of ties with Israel as a critical step for Saudi Arabia’s long-term security and economic development.
