Russian attack submarines have conducted unprecedented missions in the Irish Sea twice since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, according to sources familiar with the matter. These operations, involving Kilo-class submarines, forced the UK military to take steps to protect British and Irish waters.
The first mission occurred about 18 months ago, with the second happening more recently. The submarines, capable of firing Kalibr cruise missiles, ventured closer to the Irish Sea than previously seen, raising concerns among UK defense officials.
The deployment of Russian submarines around the UK and Ireland appears to be an attempt to probe weaknesses in sea defenses or intimidate the UK due to its support for Ukraine.
The situation has heightened awareness of the importance of the Irish Sea, which includes critical infrastructure like the EXA Atlantic undersea cable connecting Ireland, Canada, and the UK. Enhanced maritime patrolling and inter-agency cooperation are ongoing to protect such vital assets.
