The North Caucasus region, particularly Chechnya, has a history of conflict, with Russia fighting two wars there in the 1990s and early 2000s to quell separatist movements. Following these conflicts, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has exerted strict control over the region, effectively curtailing opposition and dissent.
