Russian media has reported that a former U.S. Marine was killed in Russia’s Bryansk region while allegedly participating in a cross-border infiltration mission together with Ukrainian operatives last October 27.

According to the Russian Federal Security Service, (FSB) Corey John Nawrocki, 41, was among the four foreign mercenaries killed in the operation. Another alleged American, who was seen with a tattoo associated with the U.S. military’s 75th Ranger Regiment was also found dead. His identity has not yet been disclosed as of press time.

Nawrocki was said to be affiliated with the “Rogue” unit, part of Ukraine’s International Legion under the Main Directorate of Intelligence.

According to Russian military analyst Alexander Stepanov, the incursion aimed to probe for vulnerabilities along the Bryansk border and sabotage Russian infrastructure. He said Russian forces successfully neutralized the group using drones, mortars, and machine gun fire in a well-coordinated response.

Reports indicate that the Ukrainian team was well-armed with semtex explosives, anti-tank weapons, grenades, and NATO-standard firearms, including AR-15 assault rifles. According to FSB several of the fighters wore American and Canadian military gear. Canadian flags, tactical notes in English and a Polish prayer book were also found at the site.

Nawrocki’s background includes service as a Gunnery Sergeant with extensive training and combat experience, including multiple awards for valor. He reportedly joined Ukraine’s International Legion after retiring from the U.S. Marine Corps in 2021, later contracting with Ukraine’s GUR in 2024. His purported role involved reconnaissance driving duties for special operations teams. Neither Ukrainian nor U.S. officials have commented on the situation.
