Russia has incurred significant military losses in Ukraine since the beginning of June, according to Ukrainian military reports. Between June 1 and the morning of June 3, Russian forces lost 39 tanks, 55 armored personnel vehicles, and 153 other vehicles, including fuel tanks. Additionally, Russia lost 96 artillery systems during this period. The figures were released amid ongoing heavy fighting along the eastern front lines.
In contrast, Moscow reported that Ukrainian forces lost 17 tanks and armored vehicles, 55 other military vehicles, and 59 artillery pieces over the same timeframe. Newsweek has noted the difficulty in independently verifying these claims.
According to Kyiv, Russia experienced about 39,000 casualties in Ukraine last month, marking the highest monthly figure since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. This data aligns with estimates from other countries, highlighting the intense and sustained combat.
British defense intelligence officials estimated over the weekend that Russia sustained more than 1,200 daily casualties in May as they pressed a new offensive near Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. This casualty rate is reportedly the highest since the conflict began, attributed to Russia’s broad and ongoing attritional offensive.
UK military officials noted that Russian recruits often receive limited combat training before being deployed, impairing their ability to conduct complex operations. As a result, Russian forces have been employing small-scale but costly wave attacks to wear down Ukrainian defenses. Despite these losses, the Kremlin continues to recruit additional forces, although this approach limits their ability to form higher capability units.
Ukrainian defense officials emphasized their resolve, stating, “The occupiers have two options: return to their land or be buried in ours.” Over the past 24 hours, Ukrainian forces reported killing 1,270 Russian soldiers and destroying 14 tanks, 22 armored combat vehicles, and 47 artillery systems.
While precise battlefield losses are challenging to verify, the reported figures provide some insight into the heavy toll on both militaries after more than two years of full-scale war. Ukraine claimed to have destroyed 880 Russian armored vehicles in May, the second-highest monthly total since the conflict began. May also marked the highest number of Russian artillery losses, with 1,160 systems destroyed, according to Kyiv.
Ukraine reported fierce fighting south of Kupiansk and west of the Russian-controlled city of Avdiivka, towards the strategic settlement of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that its forces had captured the village of Umanske, located west of Avdiivka and southeast of Pokrovsk. Additionally, Moscow reported repelling four Ukrainian counterattacks east of Pokrovsk, including in the village of Ocheretyne.
