Two bases belonging to the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were struck by rockets, Italy’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday. The attacks targeted a headquarters in Shama, housing the Italian contingent, and another site in Ramyeh.
Although no fatalities occurred, five Italian soldiers are under medical observation, and four Ghanaian peacekeepers sustained injuries at the Ramyeh post. Both bases suffered structural damage.
Initially, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto attributed the attack to Israel but later revised the claim after updated information. An official statement from the ministry identified Hezbollah as responsible. UNIFIL, which monitors the demarcation line between Israel and Lebanon, stated the rockets were “fired most likely by non-State actors within Lebanon.”
The attack in Shama struck logistical areas such as a supply warehouse and a maintenance workshop, avoiding personnel-heavy zones. However, the Ramyeh base saw injuries among its peacekeepers.
The incidents come amid heightened conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, with UNIFIL increasingly under threat in the volatile southern Lebanon region.
