Intense battle in Ukraine claimed the life of American retired Special Forces soldier Nicholas Maimer, and efforts are being made to return his body to the United States.Â
An American retired U.S. Special Forces member, Nicholas Maimer, was killed in Ukraine during the Russia-Ukraine war. The identification of his body was made based on a video posted by Russia’s Wagner mercenary group, showing their leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, handling Maimer’s documents. Maimer’s family is seeking to bring his body back to the United States for a proper burial. The severity of the fighting around Bakhmut, where Maimer was killed, is among the most intense in Ukraine. It remains uncertain whether Russia plans to return Maimer’s body, and the U.S. State Department has not yet commented on the matter. Another U.S. Marine, Cooper “Harris” Andrews, was also killed in Ukraine a month prior during the battle for a crucial road to Bakhmut.Â
