A joint U.S.-Qatari team, with assistance from Syrian security forces, has discovered human remains believed to be those of missing American journalist Austin Tice in northern Syria, according to reports.
Al Jazeera reported that the remains were found in the Aleppo region. Citing an unnamed Syrian official, the report also noted the recovery of two other bodies at the site.
According to Sky News Arabia, Tice’s body was recovered from a cemetery.
Tice went missing in 2012 while reporting near Damascus, and a video released weeks later showed him blindfolded and held by armed men.
Hostage Aid Worldwide, which represents Tice’s family, urged the public not to speculate. “Only the Tice family will issue official comments or statements,” the group said.
The U.S. State Department has not yet commented on the news and no official identification of the remains has been made.
