Polish authorities announced on Thursday that they had launched operations in Warsaw and the southern city of Tychy targeting a Russian espionage network. The raids were initiated based on intelligence from the Czech Republic, revealing efforts to organize pro-Russian initiatives and media campaigns within the EU. Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) emphasized the operation’s importance in counteracting attempts to implement the Kremlin’s foreign policy goals, which include undermining Poland’s global stance, discrediting Ukraine, and tarnishing the image of EU institutions.
Jack Dobzynski, an ABW spokesperson, detailed the network’s objectives, stating it aimed to advance Moscow’s foreign policy by creating Russian spheres of influence in Europe. The investigations, which started in January, led to charges against a Polish citizen involved in espionage for Russia, engaging in propaganda, disinformation, and political provocation.
In a parallel development, the Czech Republic announced the dismantling of a Moscow-funded propaganda network. The network used the Prague-based news website Voice of Europe to oppose EU support for Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia. Czech intelligence services identified the network’s significant impact on EU security, revealing operations against Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. The Czech government has sanctioned individuals and entities involved, including two pro-Kremlin Ukrainian politicians and the Voice of Europe, for their roles in the influence operation.
The German Interior Ministry has recognized the case as part of Russia’s broad influence activities, pledging to continue investigating and counteracting such operations in cooperation with international partners. The revelations highlight the extensive efforts by Russia to manipulate political processes within the EU, emphasizing the need for vigilance and cooperation among member states to safeguard democratic institutions and electoral integrity.
