Polish prosecutors announced on Wednesday that six individuals have been charged with sabotage and other crimes allegedly carried out on behalf of foreign intelligence agencies.
The six charged include three Polish nationals identified as Kamil K., Dawid P., and Lukasz K., and three Belarusians identified as Stepan K., Andrei B., and Yaraslau S.
The indictment covers several incidents, including an arson attack on a pallet storage facility in Marki, central Poland, in April 2024, an attempted arson at a warehouse in Gdansk in March 2024 and arson attacks on a restaurant in Gdynia in 2023.
The investigation stemmed from evidence uncovered during the probe of Ukrainian citizen Serhii S., who was jailed earlier this year for planning sabotage for Russian intelligence.
“The evidence obtained in this case indicated a suspicion that an organised criminal group operating in Poland [is] engaged in recruitment and organisation of sabotage activities for foreign intelligence agencies,” the spokesperson from the prosecutor’s office said in a statement. “The actions of foreign intelligence agencies were aimed at generating public unrest and creating a sense of helplessness among state authorities through sabotage and subversion.”
Poland said its role as a major route for aid to Ukraine has made it a target of Russian and Belarusian intelligence operations.
Last month, Poland charged a Colombian national with terrorism for allegedly setting fire to two construction warehouses in 2024 on behalf of Russian intelligence.
