The Pentagon has launched GenAI.mil, giving all three million military, civilian, and contractor personnel access to generative AI tools. War Secretary Pete Hegseth said the platform can conduct research, format documents, and analyze video and imagery at unprecedented speed.
According to a press release, all GenAI.mil tools are certified for Controlled Unclassified Information and Impact Level 5, ensuring operational security. The first AI available on the platform is a government version of Google Gemini, designed for highly sensitive but unclassified information.

Gemini for Government uses natural language conversation, retrieval-augmented generation, and web grounding via Google Search to deliver reliable outputs while minimizing AI errors. The Department of War is providing no-cost training on the platform to all employees.
“AI tools present boundless opportunities to increase efficiency, and we are thrilled to witness AI’s future positive impact across the War Department,” Hegseth said.
“There is no prize for second place in the global race for AI dominance,” Emil Michael, Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering said. “AI is America’s next manifest destiny, and we’re ensuring that we dominate this new frontier.”
The Pentagon said its AI initiatives align with President Donald Trump’s July directive “to achieve an unprecedented level of AI technological superiority.” The Department plans to expand GenAI.mil with additional AI capabilities and eventually use it for classified information.
