A gunman opened fire during a wedding reception at Sky Meadow Country Club in New Hampshire Saturday night, killing one man and injuring two others, officials said.
The suspect, 23-year-old Hunter Nadeau, was arrested at the scene and charged with second-degree murder in the death of 59-year-old Robert Steven DeCesare, New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella said.
Additional charges are expected for the wounded victims.
Witnesses said the incident occurred during a dance for the bride and groom. Six gunshots were heard before a man managed to subdue the suspect.
“I was talking to a gentleman in there who took a chair, hit him over the head, he dropped the gun, and the man fled,” Sophie Flabouris, a Lowell teacher attending the wedding, told CBS News. She added that the gunman had blood on him and ran toward the kitchen area.
Formella said Nadeau, a former employee of Sky Meadow Country Club in Nashua, made “a number of statements” during the attack, including “Free Palestine.”
Authorities said the investigation into Nadeau’s motive is ongoing and that there is no evidence the shooting was driven by hate or political reasons.
Formella commended the “selfless acts of courage” by the man who subdued the shooter.
New Hampshire Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan expressed condolences on social media, calling the attack a “horrific tragedy.”
