Project Hunter is in its final stages to select a new battle rifle for the UK’s Special Operations Brigade, while Project Grayburn is considering a modular weapon system to replace the SA80 and is expected to explore options by 2025. The UK military is also exploring new personal weapons systems.Â
The UK is nearing a decision for Project Hunter to acquire a new battle rifle for the British Army’s Special Operations Brigade. The SA80 bullpup assault rifle has had several upgrades but suffered operational failures in adverse environmental conditions. Project Grayburn, still in the concept phase, could begin exploring options for an SA80 replacement by 2025, with a “modular” weapon system a potential option. The UK military is exploring the introduction of new personal weapons systems, including the planned procurement and support of an Armalite rifle platform Alternative Individual Weapon system. No preferred bidder for Project Hunter has been identified yet due to commercial sensitivities.Â
