Mexico Escalates Airborne Raids on Cartel Drug Laboratories

Mexico’s Secretaría de Marina (SEMAR) and Army infantry units conducted helicopter-borne air assault operations against clandestine synthetic drug laboratories this week. Footage from both services shows personnel deploying from aircraft to raid suspected narcotics production sites across multiple states.

On May 17, SEMAR, together with the Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana (SSPC) and the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR), dismantled five clandestine methamphetamine laboratories in Jalisco, Nayarit, and Sinaloa. The operation seized more than one metric ton of methamphetamine and nearly 10,000 liters of chemical precursors, with the government reporting organized crime losses exceeding 650 million pesos.

Mexican security officials linked the laboratories to Audias Flores Silva, alias “El Jardinero,” a senior Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) lieutenant and one-time anticipated successor to cartel founder Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.” Flores Silva was arrested in Nayarit on April 27, 2026. A federal judge blocked his extradition to the United States on April 30, 2026.

The footage, drawn from SEMAR’s official social media accounts, shows Infantes de Marina (naval infantry) and Army troops arriving by helicopter, entering warehouse-type structures, and inspecting equipment the footage appears to link to narcotics manufacturing. While helicopter insertions are typical of military special operations rather than traditional law enforcement, the tactic remains a mainstay of Mexico’s heavily militarized, decades-long approach to dismantling remote cartel facilities.

SEMAR’s Infantes de Marina maintained a steady pace of similar operations through May. On May 13, 2026, personnel from the Décima Sexta Zona Naval (16th Naval Zone) dismantled a CJNG-linked laboratory in Los Reyes, Michoacán, in coordination with the Guardia Civil.

SEMAR stated the operations are designed to act “strategically to prevent illicit substances from reaching Mexican families.”
