Two Jewish men were stabbed in Golders Green, north London, on Wednesday in what the Metropolitan Police have formally declared a terrorist incident. The same suspect had knifed another man in southeast London earlier that morning before traveling to the Jewish-majority neighborhood, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley confirmed.
Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of the Metropolitan Police counterterrorism unit, confirmed the terrorism designation at an afternoon press conference. The two victims, aged 76 and 34, were treated at the scene by the Jewish volunteer ambulance service Hatzola and remain in stable condition in the hospital. A 45-year-old suspect was Tasered and arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Shomrim, a Jewish volunteer neighborhood patrol, detained the suspect before officers arrived. “One male was seen running along Golders Green Road armed with a knife and attempting to stab Jewish members of the public,” Shomrim stated on X.

Rowley said the suspect had a history of serious violence and mental health issues. A crowd at the scene called for Rowley’s resignation.

Pro-Iranian group Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia (HAYI) stated on social media that it was responsible for the attack. Police have not confirmed the claim.
Western security services assess HAYI as either aligned with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) or operating as a criminal proxy, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported.
On Tuesday, Britain summoned the Iranian ambassador over “unacceptable and inflammatory” embassy social media posts.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer chaired an emergency Cabinet Office Briefing Rooms (COBR) meeting Wednesday and vowed to confront “malign state actors.”
The stabbing follows a month-long series of arson attacks on Jewish sites in north London. Taylor said investigators are working to establish whether the attack “was deliberately targeting the Jewish community in London.”
