The recent hospitalization of U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has led to a significant controversy due to a notable lack of communication within the Pentagon and to other government branches. Despite being hospitalized on January 1st for complications from elective surgery, this information was not promptly shared with Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks, Austin’s second in command, or with President Biden and Congress. Hicks, who assumed Austin’s duties during this period, was uninformed until January 4th.
This lack of transparency was criticized by members of Congress, including Senator Roger Wicker and Representative Mike Rogers, who stressed the importance of transparency regarding the health of national command authorities. The Pentagon Press Association also expressed outrage over the delayed disclosure, emphasizing it as a deviation from customary federal department practices.
Austin acknowledged the concerns in a statement, admitting he could have better informed the public and accepting full responsibility for the decisions about disclosure. He has since resumed his full duties, but the nature of his medical procedure remains unspecified.
