German authorities arrested a Libyan national on Saturday, suspecting him of plotting a terrorist attack on the Israeli Embassy in Berlin. The individual, identified only as Omar A., aged 28, was reportedly affiliated with the Islamic State (ISIL/ISIS) militant group. He was detained by heavily armed police in Bernau, a town near Berlin, following a raid prompted by intelligence from a foreign agency. Prosecutors allege that the suspect had been planning a high-profile attack involving firearms and had communicated with an ISIL member via a messaging app.
The German Federal Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that security forces also searched the residence of a relative of Omar A. near Bonn, who is being treated as a witness but not a suspect in the investigation. According to German newspaper Bild, the suspect had entered Germany in November 2022 and sought asylum the following January, a request that was rejected in September 2023.
The arrest comes amid heightened vigilance in Germany following the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas, which has led to increased concerns about Islamist terrorism and anti-Semitism. Ron Prosor, Israel’s ambassador to Germany, publicly thanked German authorities for ensuring the embassy’s security. The suspect will face Germany’s Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe, where a judge will decide whether he will remain in custody pending further investigation.
