Cecilia Sala, a 29-year-old Italian journalist, was arrested in Tehran on December 19 while reporting on events in Iran. Sala, a correspondent for Il Foglio and Chora Media, is being held in solitary confinement at Evin Prison, a facility notorious for detaining political prisoners and individuals accused of security-related offenses.
Sala was in Iran on a valid journalist visa and had been reporting since December 12 on topics such as anti-government protests, economic issues, and changes in the region following the fall of Syria’s Assad regime. She was scheduled to fly back to Italy on December 20 but did not show up at the airport. Iranian authorities have not publicly confirmed the reason for her detention. Sala has been allowed two phone calls to her family, and Italy’s ambassador to Iran, Paola Amadei, visited her in prison, reporting she is in good health.
Italy’s Foreign Ministry and diplomatic officials have been working to secure Sala’s release. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated that the government is closely monitoring the situation. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto emphasized that negotiations require high-level diplomacy rather than public pressure. Italian leaders, including opposition figures, have urged swift action to bring Sala home.
