n Monday, the Israeli military concluded a two-week operation at Gaza’s largest medical facility, Shifa Hospital, marking its second significant raid on the establishment. The aftermath has left the hospital severely damaged, with the infrastructure sustaining substantial destruction. Israeli forces assert this action as a strategic success in their ongoing conflict with Hamas, emphasizing their efforts to avoid civilian casualties and provide humanitarian aid to those inside the hospital.
In contrast to Israel’s claims, accounts from on-ground observers and statements from the World Health Organization (WHO) depict a harrowing siege. The WHO reported the deaths of 21 patients within the hospital since the commencement of the Israeli military operation, highlighting the dire conditions, including critical shortages of water, medical supplies, and the spread of contagious diseases among the sheltered civilians and patients.
The operation led to intense fighting in the vicinity of Shifa, with reports of airstrikes and forced evacuations contributing to a broader crisis.

Israel acknowledged the detention of 900 individuals suspected of militant activities during the raid, with a confirmation of 500 as militants. This includes high-level Hamas commanders and members of its political echelon. However, reports from the Gaza Health Ministry and Al Jazeera suggest that medical workers and journalists were among those detained.
As the raid concluded, the Israeli military reported the deaths of two of its soldiers and injuries to eight others. Militant groups, including the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, claimed engagements with Israeli forces during and following the operation. Despite the stated objective of neutralizing militant operations within Shifa, the raid has drawn intense scrutiny over the legality and morality of targeting a medical facility. Critics argue that the evidence provided by Israel to justify the hospital’s militarization by Hamas is insufficient and unconvincing.
