The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have concluded an investigation into the deaths of three Israeli hostages, determining there is a “high probability” that they were killed by an Israeli airstrike in November 2023. The hostages—two soldiers, Corporal Nick Beizer and Sergeant Ron Sherman, and a civilian, Eliya Toledano—were being held in a Hamas tunnel complex in Gaza when the airstrike occurred.
The IDF confirmed that the strike was part of a targeted operation aimed at Hamas Northern Brigade commander Ahmed Ghandour on November 10, 2023. The three hostages were in the tunnel with Ghandour when the strike hit. Their bodies were recovered on December 14, and an investigation followed to determine the cause of their deaths.
The IDF’s investigation, based on intelligence reports, forensic analysis, and the location of the hostages’ bodies, concluded that the deaths were likely the result of an Israeli airstrike aimed at eliminating Ghandour. The military noted that it was unaware of the presence of hostages in the area at the time of the strike. According to the IDF, while there is a high probability that Israeli fire caused their deaths, it is not possible to definitively determine the exact circumstances.
The hostages were believed to have been captured by Hamas during the group’s large-scale assault on Israel on October 7, 2023. Ron Sherman’s family, for example, reported that he was abducted while stationed near a Gaza border crossing.
The findings have intensified domestic criticism of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, with relatives of hostages and thousands of protesters demanding a ceasefire and stronger efforts to secure the release of hostages. The deaths of hostages in Israeli strikes have led to widespread grief and outrage among the public, especially as efforts to negotiate their release continue.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) reports that 101 hostages remain captive, 35 of whom are presumed dead. The recovery of the hostages has been one of the Israeli government’s central objectives in its military campaign in Gaza, with public pressure on the government growing following recent discoveries of hostage deaths.
The IDF has also stated that throughout the conflict, it has avoided striking areas where there were clear indications of hostages being held. In this case, no intelligence suggested that hostages were present in the targeted tunnel.
