Iran claims Israel attempted to assassinate President Masoud Pezeshkian and other government officials during a missile strike on June 15, according to Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-affiliated Fars News Agency.
According to the news outlet, six bombs targeted both access and entry points of a secret underground facility in Tehran on June 15, while Pezeshkian was attending an emergency meeting of the Supreme National Security Council.
Pezeshkian reportedly sustained minor leg injuries while escaping through an emergency hatch. The heads of Iran’s judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, and parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, were also present during the attack but were unharmed.
The report says an investigation is underway to determine whether a mole provided Israel with information about the meeting.
Last week, Pezeshkian said that Israel had tried to assassinate him but did not specify when the alleged attempt took place or whether it was during last month’s conflict.
“They did try, yes. They acted accordingly, but they failed,” Pezeshkian said in response to Tucker Carlson’s question about whether he believes Israel tried to kill him.
Israel has not commented on the allegation. However, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz previously revealed that during the recent 12-day conflict, Israel came close to assassinating Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but he evaded the strike by going into deep hiding.
