A recent airstrike operation may have killed Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurayshi, the leader of ISIS, and four other high-ranking members of the organization. The operation, reportedly executed by the Iraqi “Golden Division,” targeted a complex with warplanes and is awaiting DNA confirmation of al-Qurayshi’s death.

Key Points:

  1. The operation was conducted by the elite commandos of the Iraqi “Golden Division,” who retrieved the bodies after warplanes struck the complex.
  2. Gen Abdul Wahab el-Saadi believes that the killed individuals were integral to the Islamic State, indicating a successful operation, with DNA tests currently underway for final confirmation.
  3. Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurayshi had assumed the leadership of ISIS in November the previous year, following the death of his predecessor, Abu al-Hasan al-Hashmi al-Qurayshi.
  4. Al-Qurayshi, described as an “old fighter,” was reportedly highly respected among his subordinates and little is known about his background.
  5. ISIS continues to maintain a high level of security with leadership constantly moving to avoid detection and continues to pose a threat despite the death of several leaders.
