Inside the Navy SEALs Strength in Numbers and Elite Training

Navy SEALs conduct immediate action drills at the John C. Stennis Space Center. The drills are a part of the SEALs pre-deployment training. Navy SEALs are the maritime component of U.S. Special Operations Command and are trained to conduct a variety of operations from the sea, air and land.

The U.S. Special Operations Forces (SOF), including Navy SEALs and Army Green Berets, are elite units under the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM). As of November 2023, there are over 10,000 personnel in the Navy Special Warfare Command (NSW), which includes SEALs and Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewmen (SWCC). The SEALs consist of ten teams, with around 2,900 active-duty members and 200 in the reserves, all undergoing grueling training. On the other hand, the Green Berets have approximately 1,100 Green Berets in each of their active-duty groups, with support staff bringing the total to about 3,000. Each Green Beret group contains Special Forces Operational Detachments – Alpha (A-Teams) with 12 highly trained soldiers. These SOF units are known for their exceptional skills, rigorous training, and strict selection criteria.
