The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in India has busted a human trafficking network that duped individuals into traveling to Russia under the guise of employment opportunities, only to force them into fighting in the ongoing war in Ukraine. This network utilized social media platforms, particularly YouTube, to target and lure young men with the prospect of lucrative jobs, concealing the grim reality of combat roles on the front lines.
The operation has tragically led to the death of at least two Indian nationals, with several others grievously injured in the conflict. The trafficked individuals were trained for combat and deployed against their will in hazardous zones, significantly endangering their lives. The CBI has initiated legal actions against various private visa consultancy firms and agents involved, conducting raids in 13 locations, including major cities like Delhi and Mumbai, seizing cash, documents, and electronic devices related to the racket.
The Indian foreign ministry, acknowledging the issue, has been coordinating with Russian authorities to secure the discharge of Indian nationals from military enlistment. It has also issued advisories urging Indian citizens to steer clear of the conflict and exercise caution.
