Despite her outward resilience, Queen Victoria experienced seven attempts on her life, which had a negative influence on her mental health. Her private journals also reflect the deep effect of personal losses, which later in life resulted in anxiety, despair, and fewer public appearances.

Queen Victoria faced seven attempts on her life during her reign, which had a significant impact on her mental state despite her outward stoicism. The fifth attack occurred in 1850 when Robert Pate struck her on the head with a cane. Victoria remained composed, stating that she was unhurt. While the media praised her resilience, her personal diaries revealed her emotional turmoil, describing the incident as a “horrid dream.” Despite her emotional struggles, Victoria continued to fulfill her royal duties, receiving support and admiration from the public. However, these traumatic experiences, coupled with personal losses such as the death of her husband Albert, took a toll on her, leading to periods of anxiety, depression, and reduced public appearances later in life.
