Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin were overheard discussing organ transplants as a way to extend human life during a military parade in Beijing.
The exchange, caught on a hot mic, was aired by state television during Wednesday’s parade in Tiananmen Square marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

“Human organs can be continuously transplanted. The longer you live, the younger you become, and [you can] even achieve immortality,” Putin said.
Xi responded: “Some predict that in this century, humans may live to 150 years old.”
Putin later told reporters that he had discussed with Xi the possibilities of significantly extending human life expectancy.
Both Xi and Putin have taken steps to extend their time in power, with Xi eliminating term limits in 2018 and Putin amending Russian law to remain in office until 2036.
Putin has long shown an interest in extending human life. In 2024, he directed lawmakers to create a research center called the New Health Preservation Technologies. The initiative focuses on developing technologies to prevent cellular aging, advance neurotechnologies, and support innovations designed to extend human lifespan.
Critics noted the ethical implications, pointing to China’s history of forced organ harvesting from detained groups, including Falun Gong practitioners and Uyghur Muslims.
Investigations estimate tens of thousands of unaccounted transplants occurred between 2000 and 2005, with some reports suggesting up to 100,000 procedures annually. In 2019, the independent China Tribunal concluded that such practices constituted crimes against humanity.
Meanwhile, Wednesday’s parade highlighted China’s military power, with leaders from North Korea, Belarus, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Myanmar in attendance. The display featured drones, tanks, and nuclear-capable missiles.
