The FSB, Russia’s primary security agency and successor to the KGB, announced on Thursday that it had evidence of the UK’s Special Boat Service (SBS) operating within Ukraine. According to the FSB, the SBS has been supporting Ukrainian forces in planning and executing operations against Russian military targets. This accusation comes amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has significantly deteriorated Moscow’s relations with Western countries since its inception.
President Vladimir Putin has previously stated that NATO military personnel are already present in Ukraine, a claim that has heightened concerns over the potential for escalated conflict involving multiple global powers. However, the United States and key European allies have consistently denied any intention to deploy ground troops to the region.
The FSB alleges it thwarted an attempt by British special forces to facilitate a landing of Ukrainian sabotage troops on the Tendrov Split, a strategic sandbar located in the Black Sea. The agency claims to have apprehended a senior figure within the Ukrainian naval special forces, providing his name and date of birth as proof of the operation’s existence and the SBS’s direct involvement.
Britain’s Defence Ministry has yet to respond to these allegations. The Special Boat Service, known for its extensive history dating back to World War Two, has played critical roles in numerous significant military engagements over the past seventy years, including the Korean War, the Falklands War, and more recent conflicts in Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
