A French Rafale jet neutralized an Iranian Shahed drone using an air-to-air missile over Iraq’s Erbil Governorate on April 14, in a move to protect local partners during regional escalation. President Macron later confirmed French forces intercepted several threats to stabilize the airspace, validating reports initially withheld by the French Ministry and Operation Inherent Resolve.
Accounts on X covered the event with conflicting aircraft identifications. Status-6, a military affairs account, identified the jet as a Dassault Rafale and described the weapon as a Missile d’Interception, de Combat et d’Auto-défense (MICA) air-to-air missile, an identification that has not been confirmed.

Clash Report attributed the intercept to a Mirage 2000. Both accounts identified the target as an Iranian Shahed-type kamikaze drone.

If confirmed, the Erbil intercept marks the first successful French aerial drone shoot-down in Iraq since France launched major retaliatory strikes against Iranian drone depots on February 28. This action reflects a shift in French military posture following the escalation in early 2026.
French Rafale jets at Al Dhafra Air Base in Abu Dhabi have fired an estimated 100 MICA missiles against Iranian drones and cruise missiles targeting the UAE, La Tribune reported.
That pace of expenditure rapidly depleted national stocks and prompted French Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu to convene a crisis meeting on March 17.
To reduce MICA consumption, France deployed Tigre attack helicopters to the UAE, using their 30mm cannons to intercept drones. The French Army confirmed the Tigre’s first combat drone kills in that role on April 9.
France has operated in Iraq under Operation Chammal, its contribution to Operation Inherent Resolve against the Islamic State, since September 2014.
SOFX has not independently verified the aircraft type or munition used in the April 14 intercept.
