A fire at a warehouse in the Alabuga Special Economic Zone in Russia’s Tatarstan region has destroyed $16 million worth of drone components intended for assembly at the nearby Yelabuga drone factory.
According to Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR), the fire decimated fuselages for 65 Shahed-136 drones, along with engines, navigation systems, and thermal imaging cameras sufficient to produce an additional 400 drones.

The cause of the fire remains officially unconfirmed, though Ukrainian sources described it as a “mystery.”
The Yelabuga factory, located more than 800 miles from Ukraine, has been operational since July 2023 and specializes in producing Iranian-designed Shahed-136 drones and M3 Albatross reconnaissance drones for Russia’s military.
These drones, often used in attacks on Ukrainian cities, are reported to be manufactured at a rate of 6,000 units annually. The factory’s production is part of Moscow’s broader strategy to bolster its arsenal amid a prolonged conflict with Ukraine.
The destruction of the warehouse comes amid reports of equipment shortages faced by Russian forces, with November reportedly marking a two-year high in material losses. This fire is the latest in a series of incidents targeting Russian arms production and storage facilities, aligning with Ukraine’s strategy of disrupting Moscow’s logistical and manufacturing capabilities.
